đ”Notes on infinityđ¶
Marveling at the boundlessness of God
Welcome! I pray your January felt purposefulâeven if the days flew by. I am grateful for the opportunity to share a few thoughts last month on crossroads decisions (âDonât Get Too Comfortable!â) and the nearness of God (âDegrees of Separationâ). Today, letâs pause to wonder at the boundlessness of GodâŠafter a few lighthearted ânotesâ on infinity.
Mathematical music
Confession: I have loved music and mathematics since before I started school. Both have influenced my life deeply.
As a result, music slipped into my math lessons at timesâpopular songs rewritten with a mathematical twist.
Imagine the first day of school: a somewhat cheesy music video with images that made students roll their eyes (then smile) at the following unexpected lyrics:
Learning Math Again
(Tune: âOn the Road Againâ by Willie Nelson)
Learning math again.
I just canât wait to start learning math again.
Equations, formulas, and plotting graphsâoh, man!
I canât wait to start learning math again.
Or picture an algebra class as the audience for what they think will be Miley Cyrusâ âItâs the Climbââonly to find the lyrics include formulas for linear equations and climax with the words âItâs a line.â
But my personal favorite? A rewrite inspired by Joan Jettâs âI Love Rock and Rollâ:
I Am Infinity
Verse:
I thought I saw him just ahead of me.
I tried to catch him, but somehow he still ran free.
I kept movinâ onâcountinâ steps as I went along,
But I could tell he was singing this song as he was tauntinâ meâ
Yeah, meâsinginâ
Chorus:
I am infinity!
You can count forever, never reach me, baby!
I am infinity,
Donât you waste your time tryinâ to count to me!
(Now you may be rolling your eyes. Ha!)
The concept of infinity
You know, the concept of infinity has always fascinated me.
Perhaps because, as humans, we are soâŠwellâŠfinite: twenty-four hour days, quarter-acre lots, fifty miles to empty, one hundred dollars in the bank. Even space exploration has its limits. We live physically bound by space and time.
Still, the notion of unbounded captivates. Why do thoughts of forever, eternity, and everlasting draw us to think more deeply? Why do they drive us to seek understanding?
Solomon, the wisest man who ever lived, provided a clue in Ecclesiastes:

Our infinite God placed eternity in our finite heartsâto draw us to Him. Even though we cannot possibly grasp Him or His ways on this side of heaven, God wants us to seek Him, to know Him, and to live eternally with Him.
You know, I believe God smiles when we ponder infinity.
Our boundless God
So letâs bring Him a little pleasure. As you read the following verses, marvel at our boundless God:

Does that eternity space in your heart feel filled to overflowing with awe and worship now? We dwell in the arms of a God who is forever enthroned, forever remembered, and forever beyond our understanding.
Closing
And yet, He is never beyond our reach.
Isaiah conveys that truth beautifully in our closing verse:

The God who inhabits eternity dwells in the humble hearts of His children through His Holy Spirit. Boundlessness and nearness on glorious display.
Until next time, may these verses linger in your heart and mind, moving you to marvel at Godâs boundlessness!

Does infinity fascinate you, too? Or is it Godâs boundlessness that stirs you most? (I hope so!) If you have a comment to add about the boundlessness of Godâor anything elseâplease feel free to share in the comment section below.
